Sometimes the mind becomes crowded with thoughts, worries, or sensations that feel difficult to manage. When this happens, it can help to pause briefly and reconnect with the present moment.
This simple exercise does not require effort or concentration. It is simply an invitation to notice what is around you.
A one-minute grounding pause
A quiet moment to reconnect with the world around you.
Take a slow breath and gently look around you.
Notice five things you can see.
They might be small or ordinary — light on a wall, the shape of a chair, a colour nearby.
Now notice four things you can feel.
Perhaps the weight of your body on the chair, your feet touching the floor, the fabric of your clothing, or the air on your skin.
Listen for three sounds.
They may be distant or very soft.
Take two slow breaths, allowing your shoulders to soften if they wish.
Finally, notice one thing that feels steady or reassuring — something simple that reminds you you are here in this moment.
A gentle reminder
Your nervous system sometimes reacts quickly to protect you. A brief pause like this can help the body realise that, right now, you are safe enough to breathe and settle.
You can return to this exercise whenever you need a small moment of steadiness.
